Fostering Early Independence and Exploration: Our Montessori Children’s House

The Children’s House, conceived by Maria Montessori, is an educational environment specifically designed for children aged 2 to 6 years old. Inspired by a deep observation of the needs and developmental characteristics of children in this crucial stage, Montessori created a space that encourages independence, self-discipline, and active exploration.

The Children’s House is filled with carefully selected educational materials that invite children to engage in practical and sensorial activities, stimulating their cognitive, social, and emotional growth. In this prepared environment, children have the freedom to choose their activities and work at their own pace, guided by educators who observe, support, and nurture a natural love for learning and self-expression.

Curriculum

Children engage in activities across the Learning Areas as defined by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which directly correspond to the Montessori Areas of Learning.

Practical Life

The goal is to “help me do it by myself,” fostering a sense of capability, usefulness, and strong self-esteem that empowers children to face future challenges with assurance and self-confidence.

Sensorial Area

The Montessori Sensorial Area stimulates children’s senses through tailored materials, enhancing sensory perception and attention to detail for holistic and self-directed learning.

Language

Montessori’s literacy process is a gradual journey, starting with sounds and letters and progressing to fluent reading. It encompasses phonemic awareness, letter recognition, phonics, word building, and sentence formation through hands-on experiences, ensuring a confident path to reading and writing.

Mathematics

The mathematical process in Montessori is a gradual exploration that guides children from understanding numbers to advanced mathematical operations. It begins with concrete materials introducing numerical and geometric concepts, fostering deep comprehension. Children progress to arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, and geometry, all through hands-on experiences. This approach cultivates a strong mastery of mathematics and enduring conceptual understanding.

Montessori’s concept of human tendencies refers to the natural and universal developmental characteristics present in children.
